Usually, the headlights will just go out when they need to be replaced. If your headlights are too dim, you may have a problem with the alternator. The alternator produces electricity that your vehicle’s electrical system uses to power things such as the headlights. In addition to dim headlights, you will also have dim interior lights and taillights. You may also have one or more of the following problems.
Accessory Problems
The power accessories also rely on the alternator to produce enough power for them to operate. If the alternator fails to produce the required power, the accessories will malfunction and slow down. This can include things such as your navigation system or the USB charging ports.
Battery Problems
The alternator also produces power for the battery. Without this power, the battery would discharge until it had no charge left. Consequently, if you are having battery problems along with the dim headlights, it’s probably time to replace the alternator.
Electrical Problems
Vehicle alternators generally produce anywhere from 13 volts of electricity to 14.5 volts of electricity. Although not too common, a faulty alternator can produce excess voltage that will overheat the electrical system. When this happens, you will smell burning electricity.
Noise Problems
The alternator can also let you know that it is malfunctioning by making an audible noise that you hear coming from the engine. This noise is usually grinding. In the case of the alternator belt, you may also hear squealing or whining in the engine.
Spark Plug Problems
The alternator also provides power to the spark plugs. When it is not working correctly, the spark plugs cannot work correctly. Consequently, you may have problems with your vehicle’s engine stalling or performing poorly. You may also notice that it is misfiring when it is idling.
Dashboard Warning
Finally, the alternator may trigger a dashboard warning that will remain illuminated until you replace it. This morning is an illuminated battery light or ALT light. Take all of your dashboard warning lights seriously to avoid damaging your automobile unnecessarily.
